Belt it By Brittany West - Friday, September 25, 2009

What do you do with all those baby doll and tent dresses that have dominated the last several seasons?  The answer is in the simple swathe of a leather belt...

When dresses became such a huge trend a few seasons ago they were very voluminous and mostly shift and trapeze styles, but simply by purchasing a belt you can take that dress from a couple seasons ago and make it look new, especially if you're on a budget.

The possibilities are endless: wide, skinny, low-slung, high-waist. Spice up a shirt dress, add interest to a long-forgotten cardigan, or funk up your favorite Little Black Dress. The belt is the recessionista’s answer to livening up her closet without breaking the bank.

Belts are a great way to buy something designer without having to spend a lot of money.  With luxury being more lucrative these days, accessories are the perfect way to add a touch of luxury. Maybe you wouldn’t buy the designer look head to toe, but would get the designer belt?

So, ready to Belt it? Here are a few tips that will help you get started this season.

Keep It Simple

The key to belting it this season is to flatter instead of boldly draw attention. Belts are a bit tamer this season, with less embellishments and more focus on colors, new fabrications and leather treatments. My favorite is the nude or barely there color in shoes, creating the illusion of longer legs.

Know Your Waist

Don’t just buy something because it’s trendy, choose a belt that is flattering to your body shape.

For example, a skinny belt like the one above works wonders on a shorter torso, and this season they come in a range of eye-catching jewel tones, perfect for adding that pop of color to your outfit.

A skinny belt can also give the illusion of more length and accentuate your waist when worn over a long cardigan and a floral dress, ensuring your shape isn't lost under all those flowing layers.

On the other side of the table, wide belts like Victoria Beckhams are fantastic on long-waisted body types when paired with tunics and capris.

With the skinny-jean trend going strong and a bohemian/hippie girl/Western look on the horizon, belts in earth tones are making a splash this season. Try pairing a floral romantic blouse or dress this spring with a wide contoured braided belt as another way to play with the bohemian-hippie-Western trend.

Have Fun

Women these days are paying more attention to accessories and, conversely, designers are doing fun things with accessories. Belts are no exception. Belts have become fun, a great accessory to show some personality without having the "it" bay.

Dolce & Gabbana, Armani and Burberry open Milan Menswear By Brittany West - Friday, September 25, 2009

Milan’s menswear shows kicked off in style with Dolce and Gabbana and Italian designer Giorgio Armani, being the first of 40 Catwalk runs during Milan’s Spring/Summer 2010 menswear fashion week.

Armani, the quintessentially classic label referred to his menswear line “Classicism of 2010,” with the use of linen, silk and oversize patterns on shirts and ties.

Fitted suits came checked or striped in grays, light brown and pale luminous colors, teamed with loose shirts, perfect for those hot months. The 74 year old fashion genius went on to couple sky-blue patterned tops with simple white suits giving the look a very easy summer feel, while giving suits a more casual air paired with denim designs.

With a focus on embellishment, Italy’s most famous duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana chose sparkling jackets over trousers rolled to the ankles and silk shirts tucked into short fitted swimming trunks.

Whether Classic Armani or trendsetting Dolce and Gabbana is your style Voi carries a variety of suits for every taste and occasion, take a look.
